The Opra's Room (2010)
The room represent a journey under the strafing in 1943, when a family of Sicilian puppets operators, instead to emigrate to the North of Italy, looking for lucky, it travelled everywhere in the Sicilian hinterland, with a travelling theatre. Today, Mimmo Cuticchio and his family history, master of the Sicilian “Opra dei pupi” (Sicilian puppets tradition), are now part of hotel-museum Atelier sul Mare with the “Stanza dell’Opra”. With the eye enchanted and innocent of a child, Mimmo Cuticchio, artist and man of theatre whose art has today becomes Patrimony of the Humanity under the support of Unesco, narrates his infancy full of adventure and poetry, as well as hard works and sacrifices. The puppets stage can be viewed from the corridor, behind of it you find the bedroom that symbolizes the warehouse where Cuticchio’s family lived and slept during the long tours. Between the room and the external corridor, a curtain opens and closes the puppets stage during the passage of the visitor. It’s the symbol of fiction and truth, of private and public. Who get in the room is invited to play, jumping on the “teatrino” (little stage), maneuvering the puppets, and reciting contemporary personages or those related to the tradition, such as the knights of Song of Roland (la Chanson the Roland). Inside the room you find the works of Mimmo’s mother, Pina Patti. In the bathroom there are two showers that represent symbolically the two fountains of the poem of chivalry of Song of Roland: the source of love and of rage, where knights and damsels drank, inspiring the extraordinary ancient adventures known in our time.
