Maria Lai
Born in 1919 in Ulassai (Nuoro), a town situated in a rough landscape and threatened by continuous landslides, Maria Lai was educated as artist, between Rome (where she studied with Mazzacurati and Prini) and Venice, under the strict guidance of Arturo Martini. Evident talent since her youth, with a shy character, she has exposed in ifferent art exhibitions with wide intervals of time. From the seventies the artist has developed an original language in the production of sewn canvas that generate unreadable and material writings, that evoke mood and thoughts. The communication with the viewer is entrusted to the feelings generate by the weft described by the wires and the contact with the cloth, in a direct passage from the creator (artist) and the reader-interlocutor. His ceramic books instead, leave imprinted the writing as a memory of a strong gesture that leaves a mark. Starting in the eighties, his artistic research has been mainly directed to intervention on the landscape, as the art action Legarsi alla montagna (1981) where Filiberto Menna wrote some important pages such as the installation for the Museum dell'Olio at Farfa, not far from Rieti.
